Seven Qualities of a Believer: The Soldier and Sufferer

Today, let’s look at two qualities. I believe these two qualities go hand in hand. To be a soldier you must also be a sufferer. Anytime you are doing God’s will you will suffer through trials and tribulations. The devil will fight you harder and harder depending on how close you are getting to God. This is something that he cannot stand!!!! He will fight tooth and nail to tear you and God down. As a soldier in God’s army you must be prepared to endure hard times. If you are trying to be a soldier or fighter for God and everything is smooth sailing; you may need to check what you are doing and ask God; Is this what your will is? God has chosen you to be His personal soldier. And by the way the battle has already been won. We are on the winning side!

Once I drifted out in sin, had no hope nor joy within,
And my soul was burdened down with pride, with sinful pride;
Then my Savior came along and He showed me I was wrong,
Now I know I’m on the winning side.

Well, I am on the winning side, yes, I am on the winining side,
Out in sin no more will I abide;
I’ve enlisted in the fight for the cause of truth and right,
Praise the Lord, I’m on the winning side!

From the straight and narrow way I was drifting ev’ry day;
Out upon the waters deep and wide, so deep and wide;
But it all is over now, glory light is on my brow,
And my soul is on the winning side.

Well, I am on the winning side, yes, I am on the winining side,
Out in sin no more will I abide;
I’ve enlisted in the fight for the cause of truth and right,
Praise the Lord, I’m on the winning side!

I will never have a fear, for my Lord is ever near,
And in Him so often I confide, in Him confide;
He’s the keeper of my soul since I gave Him full control,
And He placed me on the winning side.

Look at these scripture dealing with a soldier.

Don’t think it strange to suffer for Christ. He suffered more on the cross than we can ever imagine for our sins.

Paul was a great soldier for Christ. He also suffered many trials and tribulations. Luke records these events in the book of Acts. Paul, himself writes of them in Romans. Take time to study Paul’s life. How are we to be a soldier and suffer as Paul did?

Psalms 9:13 Have mercy upon me, O LORD; consider my trouble which I _______of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:

Paul’s sufferings included being shipwrecked, imprisonment, more than once, and Jews seeking to kill him. Paul thought it an honor to go through these trials. I do try to remind myself when things are not going my way and times are hard that my ultimate goal is to be more like Christ so how much did Christ suffer for me?

Acts 9:16 For I will shew him how great things he must __________ for my name’s sake.

What does it mean to be a soldier, What makes a soldier, and who are soldiers? What makes a soldier is addressed in the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. Webster’s defines a soldier as one who “engages in military service”, a “skilled warrior”, and a “militant leader or follower”. The characteristics of a soldier vary in the different military branches but ultimately a soldier is loyal to his or her country, willing to fight and die. In an article by B.R. Burg, the author states “The complete officer must be the complete man, they believed, and to measure up each had to possess an amalgam of qualities that included patriotism, courage, honor, loyalty, absolute honesty, and elevated standards of morality” (439). Look at how a soldier in God’s army compares to a solder of the world. Do we have those same qualities?

Soldiers are willing to undertake their leader’s orders no matter what. Synonyms for soldier are warrior, fighter, and guard. We are warriors, due to the fact that we are in a constant war with our flesh and the devil. We fight for God’s truth and guard the beliefs and truths that our faith is built on. We stand with courage and absolute honesty with God’s power and strength behind us. Our patriotism is to our country the heaven country that we await for. Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. We are strangers in this country on earth. Psalms 119:9 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me. We also elevate the standards of morality because we try to uphold the truths of God’s word.

The Things that Make a Soldier Great

Edgar A. Guest

The things that make a soldier great and send him out to die,
To face the flaming cannon’s mouth nor ever question why,
Are lilacs by a little porch, the row of tulips red,
The peonies and pansies, too, the old petunia bed,
The grass plot where his children play, the roses on the wall:
‘Tis these that make a soldier great. He’s fighting for them all.

‘Tis not the pomp and pride of kings that make a soldier brave;
‘Tis not allegiance to the flag that over him may wave;
For soldiers never fight so well on land or on the foam
As when behind the cause they see the little place called home.
Endanger but that humble street whereon his children run,
You make a soldier of the man who never bore a gun.

What is it through the battle smoke the valiant solider sees?
The little garden far away, the budding apple trees,
The little patch of ground back there, the children at their play,
Perhaps a tiny mound behind the simple church of gray.
The golden thread of courage isn’t linked to castle dome
But to the spot, where’er it be — the humblest spot called home.

And now the lilacs bud again and all is lovely there
And homesick soldiers far away know spring is in the air;
The tulips come to bloom again, the grass once more is green,
And every man can see the spot where all his joys have been.
He sees his children smile at him, he hears the bugle call,
And only death can stop him now — he’s fighting for them all.

Now, why are we great soldiers? Is it because of what we do ourselves, of course not! It’s because of what God does. Why do we fight so hard? We are just as the soldier in the poem it is because of his home and who is there. We have our heavenly home waiting on us. Our home in heaven where God’s mansion has many mansions. How magnificent that will be!! As a soldier in God’s army fight for our children. We want our children and others to see the glory of Christ. We are fighting for God and all those they need to see his glory. Anyone saved by the God’s marvelous grace is His soldier. God doesn’t just say , “Here you go; Good Luck out there. I hope you fair well against the devil.” Of course He doesn’t! God dresses us in protective gear with all we need and prepares us with His word.

Seven Qualities of a Believer- Being a Studier

Last week, we closed up our lessons about seeking God’s face. One aspect of seeking His face is studying His word. Today we will talk about the believer’s quality to be a studier.  Why should we study? When you seek, you study, you learn, you know, and you apply. How do we study? What if I don’t do it correctly? Hopefully, this lesson will help with those questions.

Studying your Bible is more than picking it up to read it. There is no right or wrong way to study. As we study we gain wisdom, knowledge, instruction, and understanding. Proverbs is a good book to read because it is filled with all these traits. It is an excellent book to just study on it’s own. I know I have said this before but you have to dig deep into God’s word and you cannot do that by just reading the material like you would a training manual to a computer. If I did that, I would not get very far before I threw it on the floor and fell asleep. I know you can relate to that! Ecclesiastes 12:12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Also, don’t just study book after book. When you do this it makes you weary because you have so many ideas of man swirling around in your head. It’s fine to learn and be a reader; you just need to know the truth and know what you believe. Knowing what you believe gives you a strong foundation that no man can change or take away. My oldest son loves to read! His brain is like a sponge; he is so intelligent. Yet with all his knowledge he is still not saved. I believe sometimes that he thinks it through too much. He knows the Bible from cover to cover but having a head knowledge is not our answer to eternal life. You must have heart knowledge and that only comes from God. I know that when God does save him, his eyes will be open to a new doctrine of truth. The way I believe you should study God’s word is to take it verse by verse or line by line. Most Bibles have reference verses so just choose a verse, read it then go to the reference verse. Look up every piece of scripture that has a particular word in it that you want to know about. Isaiah 28: 9-13 tells us that you just take it line upon line, precept upon precept. You dissect the word of God because that’s how you learn. It is really not hard at all. I used to think that I had to have a Bible study guide or that my preacher had to feed me scripture that would allow me to grow. It’s not all their responsibility. The way you grow in Christ is studying. This is actually one of the reasons why I started this blog. God just opened my eyes one day to the idea that I needed to do this. I have enjoyed being able to study each word and really play a scavenger hunt with words that I need to know about. Something I tell my kids, whether they are my personal children or my students, is look it up. If they need to know a definition or how to spell a word, LOOK IT UP. Don’t rely on someone else’s definition of a word or topic. Rely on God; He will lead you to what you need to know.

John 1:1 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. To study the word is to know God. A life without studying is boring. We learn every day, whether it is our Bible or just reading a newspaper or sale guide. You are set up to stumble if you are a believer and do not study your Father’s words. We often do not make the right decisions or we are unsure of our selves. I have dealt with this in my life as well. Sometimes it’s a struggle to study & take that time with Him. Throughout my life I would study God’s word then I would stop; thinking I was fine and that my life would be great. But when I stopped it seemed as if I could do nothing right. The devil would be pulling me & my resistance would be weak. You must strive, there’s that word again, to be a studier and grow in a strong foundation that is rooted deep in God’s word. As a believer you need to be able to tell others about Christ. Many people you approach or that God sends your way will want proof. Proof, how do we show proof! I’m from Missouri, the show me state. This is a point my husband reminds me of a lot. I need to see it to believe. Show it to me in God’s word and I’m agreeable. I know what the Bible says but I admit I’m not the best one to tell you where to find certain scripture.

II Timothy 1:11 What are we to be for God? I know Paul is speaking about himself here but it also refers to us all. _______________________________________

II Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: ____ _____ _________whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

II Timothy 2:15 Why do we need to study? ______________________________________

In I Thessalonians 4:10-12 List the 5 reasons why you should study. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complete the chart. Remember really look deep into the verses the answers may not jump out at you.

Verse What happens when you study? What happens when you do not study?
II Timothy 2:23
Proverbs 15:28 You can fill in both columns from this verse.
Proverbs 24:3-4
I Timothy 6:18-21

Read Proverbs 24:1-2 What do evil or ungodly men study? ______________________________

Think about the different books and religious leaders that oppose the Bible. What are they doing in our world today? How is it affecting the people around you?

Of course, having benefits are great. My company pays for a gym membership as long as I go five times a month. I love benefits! So what’s not to love about the benefits you receive from God! You have many benefits to studying God’s word. Read the following verses and write the benefits in the column next to it.

Scripture Benefits
Romans 15:4
Acts 1:16
II Timothy 3:16
II Timothy 3:10
II Peter 1:20
II Peter 1:21
II Samuel 22:31

When you are a studier first and foremost you have a foundation. An equation for this is

GOD’S WORD = FOUNDATION. You are approved of God and there is no shame because you study. To be strong in God you must know the true doctrine. Knowing or being exposed to God’s thoughts is profitable and such a privilege. When we study we are able to teach and instruct others. II Timothy 4:2 says to use this knowledge not just to uplift people of need but to rebuke those that need direction. You also are made aware when your self should be rebuked. When you see your wrongs you are able to help others through theirs. Studying teaches you when to be still or keep silent. We have to have the ability to listen to others and hear what God has done for them.

II Samuel 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD _________ by me, and his _________ was in my ___________.

When you have a positive there is always a negative, some words have synonyms and antonyms. The antonym or opposite of the word benefit is disadvantage or harm so what is the harm for not studying your Bible. If you are not a child of God there is no harm, well at least you don’t know about it. As a child of God there are troubles that follow not knowing the Word of God.

Read the scripture below and in the next column record the disadvantages or harms for not studying your Bible.

Verses Disadvantages/Harms
II Thessalonians 3:11
Ephesians 4:18
II Timothy 2:3
Titus 2:3
Hebrews 13:9
Jeremiah 10:8
Romans 16:17
Ephesians 4:14

What will you be lacking from not studying God’s Word? Refer back to I Thessalonians 4:10-12 ____________________________________________________________________________

You can see that your benefits are greater when you study God’s Word. It is so important to know God’s doctrine. He tells us over and over why this is so. The following scriptures tell why it is important to know sound doctrine.

Verses The importance of knowing the doctrine
Hebrews 6:1
Titus 1:9
Titus 2:1
Titus 2:7
I Timothy 1:7-11
I Timothy 4:6
John 7:17

I and II Timothy were written by Paul. He was writing to his son in the faith. He was showing Timothy the importance of knowing God’s doctrine. Paul explains what happens when unwholesome doctrine is taught. Take a few minutes and read these verses. List what the consequences are for not knowing or falling to unwholesome doctrine. There are many false teachers in the world today. They are great orators and motivational speakers. If you are not grounded in true doctrine, it is easy to be swayed to unwholesome teachings.

Application: Today, pray that God will help to open your eyes to His truth. God will help you to be a studier of His word. I encourage you to spend time each day with Him.

Seven Qualities of a Believer- Being a Striver

I started out with a different study planned for the next two weeks. But I was not at peace with the topic so here we go. I hope that you enjoy and learn from the post. As a believer we should have many qualities, but I am going to focus on only seven. The seven S’s! We have already covered one so we will focus on the others for now. Well, that is if God allows us. These seven qualities are a striver, sower, sufferer, soldier, studier, shunner and server. I know that God will give you the understanding that you need. I hope and pray that you will grow as you study God’s word.

We begin today by looking at what not to strive for. We are human so we strive for things against God, even when we don’t realize that it is happening. It’s our FLESH! I mean wouldn’t it be nice to just have a new fancy car like your neighbors? Do you ever say that? I know that I have! So what do we do? We would spend all of our time working so the payments can be made on that new car. What does this do? HUH! It takes time away from God and causes strife in our lives. I left my teaching job in a good school system because God told me to leave. I knew deep inside that God wanted me to. I didn’t know where I was going or what I was going to do, but I had a desire to do God’s will. He had placed a desire in my heart to strive to be closer to Him. He provided me with another job. I was making less but I was at home and I could spend more time with Him. My point today is to not strive for MAN but strive for GOD!

As you read each verse don’t forget to take into account that you need to know how the word strive is defined in each verse. The Hebrew dictionary defines the word strive as “to rule” or “plead the cause”. In these following verses God is telling us not to strive against Him.

Match the correct scripture to what God says about striving.

Genesis 6:3 ________ A. Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
Proverbs 3:30 ________ B. Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
Proverbs 25:8 ______ C. Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
Job 33:12-13 ________ D. Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
Isaiah 45:9 _______ E. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

If God is saying not to be ruled by man then what should rule us? ______________________________________________________________________

Do you find yourself fighting for a cause because your friends keep encouraging you, too? Now, don’t get me wrong; fighting for causes is great, but the cause you fight for should be one that God has given you.

Luke 13:24 ________ to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. What is your cause in this verse? ________________________________________

Psalm 35:1 Plead my_________ O LORD, with them that ____________ with me: fight against them that fight against me. What was David asking God? ________________________________________

Exodus 21:22 If men _________, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

Jeremiah 50 :24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast__________against the LORD.

Isaiah 41:10-11 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that __________ with thee shall perish.

What happens if you strive for something that is against God? ______________________________________________________________________________

Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye ____________together with me in your prayers to God for me;

Deuteronomy 25:11 When men ___________ together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:

Exodus 21:18 And if men_________ together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:

In Romans 15:30 Paul tells us to strive how? ___________________________

What should we be doing for one another? ___________________________________________

In the Hebrew tongue “controversy” can also mean strive. In Hosea 4:1 What does God Himself strive with? And why? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In Hosea 4:4 Yet let no man__________, nor ____________ another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

Why should the people not strive against or reprove one another? _____________________________________________________________________________

God knows that they are all guilty of not having truth, mercy, or knowledge of God, so how can they judge someone else? A believer must be right with God before they can call another out on what they are doing wrong in God’s eyes. I know, I know; we can’t judge! We are not judges, but if you see a fellow brother or sister going against God you can lovingly bring it to their attention and then tell them that you will be praying for them.

Strive in these verses refers to debating or fighting.

II Timothy 2:24 How are we to teach men? _________________________________________

Matthew 12: 18-21 and Isaiah 42 Who will not strive? Why will He not strive or cause His voice to be heard? __________________________________________________________________

II Timothy 2:25 Instruction that is gentle and meek will do what? ________________________

Christ does not bring attention to himself. He quietly goes about His Father’s business. That is exactly how we should strive. God will send those that need to hear what you have to say because you are striving or fighting for His cause.

Romans 15:20 What did Paul strive to do?

Psalm 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they ______________in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

I Corinthians 3:9 For we are _____________ together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

I Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that you _____________ is not in vain in the Lord.

Colossian 1:29 Whereunto I also ____________, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

I Timothy 4:10 For therefore we both ______________and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so ___________ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Again, what should we be striving for? _____________

As a believer we should strive for good works because they are profitable to us and God. Strivings, which here is controversy, is unprofitable and vain. We are to avoid those arguments and debates that pull us and God down to a fleshly level..

In these particular verse the Greek translation of strive is labor. We are to labor for our LORD.

II Timothy 2:5 And if a man also ___________for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he __________lawfully.

Titus 3: 8-9 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and ________about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Application: Today in prayer ask God to show you how to strive in profitable way for Him. Remember, it’s great to have a cause but God must be able to use you in it. If you are only doing it for man, then it’s in vain.

Day 7 Seek Him First

One of my favorite church hymns is What Day It Will Be. Finally, after years of seeking Him, I will see my Saviors face. Hallelujah! I long for that day; as for now I will continue to please my Lord and seek His will for me. That is why I seek Him. While on this Earth I will seek His face until one day I will see Him face to face.

We may all have different reason to why we seek God’s face. Ultimately, it is because when we seek Him we can be a part of the deep thoughts of God. How GREAT is that!!!!! to be able to share in the deep thoughts of our Lord and Savior. The God that died for me is willing to give me a better understanding of Himself and His great works. That just blows my mind that God would want to share His thoughts with me. I pray that you have gained a greater understanding of our God through this Bible search blog. Please continue to seek Him. I pray that you have been touched by the words that God has given me.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your Bible SEARCH.

God Bless You,

Day 6 Reasons to Seek HIm

As a child of God you need to show spiritual growth. Just a baby goes from drinking milk to eating baby food to table food; as a Christian we grow little by little in God’s word. He reveals or gives us knowledge a little at a time for our understanding. God gives us many reasons to seek Him.

Complete the chart by matching the scripture to its correct verse.

1 Timothy 4:6______ A. And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
1 Timothy 4:4-5 ______ B. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
2 Timothy 3:16   ______ C. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
1 Timothy 6: 10   _____ D. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
Hebrew 6 :4-5 _____ E. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
2 Timothy 2:19   ______ F. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

As you can see God’s word equals a strong foundation. Think back to Day 2, we looked at the men that did not seek God. They relied on other men rather than having a reliance on God. You cannot listen to the flesh. Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. It always gets you into trouble. If you are not reading the scripture and seeking God; the Devil gradually creeps in. Your mind begins to play tricks on you.

Romans 7:18-20 For I know that in me (that is, in_____ _________,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the________which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but__________ ______   _________in me.

Our mind needs to focus in one direction toward God. James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Seeking God’s face and searching His word keeps your mind focused and free from the burdens of this world. We are to strive to have a mind like Christ.

Hebrew 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose __________ is __________ on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Luke 8: 35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right ____________ and they were afraid.

Acts 14:2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their __________   ________ affected against the brethren.

Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of __________ and ___________ the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do __________ the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal ____________ is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Roman 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your _____________, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:16 Be of the same ___________one toward another. ________ not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

God gives us the liberty to be open with him. If you ask Him he will give you the knowledge you seek.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Galatians 2:17 But if, while we _____________to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

We are to come boldly seeking Him with confidence to His throne. God helps us in our times of need. We can come to Him and He will identify with your needs.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come ____________ unto the ___________of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

We seek God to see His power and glory. Psalms 63:2 To see thy __________ and thy ___________, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

We seek Him because of His lovingkindness. Psalms 63:3 Because thy_______________is ___________ than life, my lips shall praise thee.

Application: Everything in your life needs to be Christ-centered. You know the things of God because you have searched the scripture. One of the most important reasons for seeking God is that you will have no regrets. You may have regrets for decisions that were made in your life, but knowing that you searched the scripture in order to seek God will never be a regret. His word does not come back void.

Day 5 Diligently Seeking God

Thank you for returning to my Bible study blog. I am so excited that I have the opportunity to write about God’s word.

Many times in our lives we tend to find happiness in other people or other things. When all along, our true happiness comes from God. This lesson may sound similar to Day 3, but there is so much that I have found and it is so important. Today, what I want you to think about is do you diligently seek God’s face? You are spending time with God right now so be honest this is between you and Him. Do you diligently seek His face?

What would happen if Christ did not diligently seek you or others? Would you be saved by His grace? We need to seek just as Christ did. God asks several times; what do you seek?

Check out and match the verses below.

John 1:38 A. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
Luke 19:10 B. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
John 20:15 C. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Philippians 2:21 D. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Luke 19:3 E.Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

Whatever you do in life you should put 100% of yourself into it. How many times in your life have you heard that statement? I will have to say every day of my life growing up! My children now hear it just about every day. Your employer expects you to be diligent in your job. In sports a person is expected to be diligent in their practices, so why are we not diligent in our Bible studies? If we put God first before all other areas, then why do you only allow 15 minutes day or 3 days a week to learn more about Him? Yes, I am guilty of this at different times in my life.

During the Christmas season I do a lot of my shopping online. I would rather avoid the crowds than get a super deal. Think about how you search for a particular item. I usually go to a search engine and type in the item. I am sure that you are like me once you start your search you have taken several rabbit trails and you’ve been on the computer for hours. We should be seeking God with that kind of diligence. Each scripture leads to another the next thing you know you have been into God’s word for hours. The difference between shopping online and seeking God is that you are exhausted after shopping and rejuvenated after you Bible study.

What does God’s word say about being diligent?

Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all __________; for out of it are the issues of life.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all _____________ to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Joshua 22:5 But take ___________ heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your________and with all your_______.

Psalm 64:6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a _____   ______: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep

Luke 15:8 Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and _______   ______till she find it?

Acts 18:25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and _______   _______ the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

Hebrews 12:15 Looking _________lest any man fail of the grace of God;

God wants us to be diligent in our search because he wants us to grow and mature in His word. As a Christian we are all at different maturity levels because we have all been saved at different times in our lives. We will never be perfect in our search of God’s knowledge but we should always give a perfect effort. We recently watched movie, When the Game Stands Tall; I loved this movie and highly suggest that you watch it. The movie is a great example of diligence and putting forth that perfect effort! Remember God’s will is perfect – man’s is not. In Colossian 3:1-2, what does God say we should focus on and why? _____________________________________________________________________________

Hebrews 11:6 says that God is a reward of those that diligently seek Him. For me, just to know that God is pleased with me because I am diligent is reason enough! When we diligently seek Him we gain wisdom.

Solomon received his wisdom from God; this is one reason why he is known as the wisest king and person who has ever lived. How did he get that way? He diligently sought God for all his questions. He was always going to God for guidance. Here is Solomon in his own words.

Ecclesiastes 1:13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

Ecclesiastes 7:25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

How do you learn to seek Him and be obedient? Hebrews 5 :7-8 ____________________________________________________________________________

We learn to seek Him through those sufferings that bring us to obedience. Paul tells us, in Hebrew 6:12, not to be slothful. What does slothful mean? ________________________________________________________________________

How is being slothful a negative connotation to seeking God’s face? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

You will never mess up by diligently seeking God’s guidance. Do you seek God’s guidance before or after you seek man’s? We should seek Him with our whole heart and soul.

Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

Application or prayer: Seek God as hard and as much as you would your favorite hobby, even more for that matter. Ask God to burden your heart to be more diligent in seeking Him. He gave His life for you; how diligent is that! He gave His ALL, we should give ours.

Day 4 Be an Example

Who are you and who are watching you? Whether you are aware or not people are watching you. You need to know you are so you can be yourself. Be who God made you to be. He looks at your heart. Be true to God – not to man. We must always seek Him in all we do.

I Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD _______not as man __________; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD_________on the heart.

In order to be a godly example we must have a heart for God one that is in tune with God’s thoughts. How do we do this? Is this something that comes easy for us? No, I do not believe it comes easy. It’s easy to sit in front of the television and eat popcorn for two hours. Study God’s word – digging deep into the scripture – actually takes time, patience and dedication.

I Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off forever.

What happens when we seek him with a perfect heart? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

II Chronicles 19:3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.

What has to be prepared before we seek God? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Acts 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

What does God know? ______________________________________________________________________

Jeremiah 20:12 But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.

What does God see? _______________________________________________________

Remember, when you are seeking God you will grow closer to Him and you will start to see yourself – how the Creator made you. Be a true example to others. Show them how to seek God. God will use you to open their eyes to the Holy Sweet God that He is.

I Timothy 4:12-16

12 Let no man despise thy youth; but _________________ of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13 Till I come, give attendance to_________, to exhortation, to __________.

14 _________ not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 ___________ upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16 Take heed unto __________, and unto the ___________; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

I love this song by the artist Selah. I think it sums up our God.

Sweet Jesus, my Savior
You are my faithful friend
You made me, You know me
And You see my every sin

And my soul is amazed
By this gift of Your grace
And these arms that take me in

Sweet Jesus, my Savior
You are my faithful friend

Sweet Jesus, my shelter
You are my faithful friend
The refuge that I run to
When my world comes closing in

Why should I be afraid
When I know I am saved
By the arms that take me in

Sweet Jesus, my shelter
You are my faithful friend, oh yeah

Sweet Jesus, my shepherd
You are my faithful friend
You hold me, You lead me
I’ll follow till the end

And once more I will say
On that beautiful day
When Your arms take me in

Sweet Jesus, my shepherd
You are my faithful friend
Sweet Jesus, my Savior
You are my faithful friend

While you complete the matching ask yourself these questions. As a woman, what should I be doing each and every day of my life? How is God telling us to be an example?

II Timothy 2: 3_______ A. …thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
II Timothy 2:15 _______ B. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
I Timothy 4:6 ________ C. To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Titus 2:5 _______ D. That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Titus 2:3 ________ E. Study to shew thyself approved unto God
Titus 2:4 ________ F. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things

Think about how you go through your day. Are you doing just that – making it through? We as women we have a lot to manage and take care of. We should be looking for all the good in our lives and not getting bogged down in routine. Who have you encountered today? How did you act in front of those people? God may have placed a girl or woman in your path that needed to hear “Have a good day.” Simple words of kindness can change a person’s day. Even when it’s hard and the person you encounter is rude and grumpy. That person you come in contact with could be Jesus. That would not be a happy moment when you realize you shrugged off Jesus.

I am surrounded by so many godly women. They are faithful and continually are serving God with a pure heart. I know by conversations, whether it is verbal or just their life’s walk, these women have continually sought the face of God. Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

They have sought Him for decades. These women have been godly examples to me. I want young women to look at me and be able to say, “She is a seeker of God’s face.” What an accolade that would be! What an encouragement we can be to others. All we have to do is want to seek and glorify God.

As women we learn from one another. When we are together we tell stories. That is exactly what God wants us to do. The young learn from the old. As we grow older we begin to think about those stories and have a need to share them.

Psalm 63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

Application: Have your prayer today be, God please have me to be an example and leader that offers guidance to those around me.

Day 3 Who are you seeking? Continued

Day 3 Whom do you seek?

Yesterday, we looked at those that did not seek God’s face. Take out your mirror again and look deep in your soul. Ask yourself, whom do I seek? Is it wealth, friends, the perfect body, a nice house, drugs, or a relationship where you feel loved? Over the years, I have sought most of these objects. We seek objects that others have hoping it will give us the peace we so desire. As humans, we are looking to fill a void but we tend to look in the wrong places. We cannot have true peace until our eyes are open to our creator. He is the only one that will give us that true peace and love.

Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Psalm 27:8-9 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

Psalm 146:5 ___________ is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:

Psalm 16:20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, __________is he.

Galatians 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Why does God want us to seek him? Does He tell us to seek Him? Being a child of God, you need to know how to follow His will and make decisions that reflect a godly life.

Take a minute to think about Paul. When he was known as Saul he still sought after Christ! Are you surprised? He was always seeking or in pursuit of God’s people. He was, in reality, keeping God close. He never went a day without hearing about God. Crazy, I know, right?? On the way to Damascus his drive took a different path. God was leading Saul on that dusty road to get him in a specific place, call his name and speak to him. Saul, now Paul, is seeking God in a different way. The same goes for us; before we are saved we are trying to fill that void. We just didn’t know it was leading us to the place where God would call our names and change our path. As a sinner, we are always seeking and in search of what will make us happy when the only thing that will give us peace and make us happy is seeking God’s face.

List four ways you seek God’s face. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What happens when a piece of your search is missing? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

How can you seek Him better? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Today pray that God will change the way you seek Him. Ask Him to only place His will in front of you. To give you the discernment you need to choose the righteous path. Amen

Day 2 Who are you seeking?

What does your body feel like when you do not drink enough water throughout the day? I know that my skin starts to feel dry and flaky. My bones and muscles hurt and are tight. This occurs because our bodies are becoming dehydrated. We need water to keep our bodies fresh. When we are hydrated we feel better and focused. Let’s relate this same concept to our spiritual bodies.

As a child of God how do feel when you haven’t read your Bible? I know that I feel frustrated, weak, unfocused and dry. As I have said before my family can list many more feelings that they have when I have not read God’s Word.

Just as your body craves water to survive; your spiritual body craves God’s Word, which is the Living Water. He is the water to our souls.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Fill in the blank:

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the ___________that I shall give him shall be in him a _________________ springing up into everlasting life.

Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul ______________for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a ___________   _______ ___________     __________, where no water is;

What are God’s feelings about us not seeking Him?

Numbers 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

God tells us not to ________________after your own __________: and your   ________ eyes.

What happens if we seek our own hearts and eyes?___________________________________

Psalm 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Who does not seek God? ___________________________________ God is not in their __________________.

Psalm 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

What is God looking for? _____________________________________

Romans 3:9-11 Again who are not seeking God? _______________________________________

Let’s look at some people that did not seek the face of God. Saul was the man the God gave Israel as king. Remember that Israel continually asked God for a King. They were not seeking His will but they were wanting to be like the other nations of the world.

Read I Samuel 9:1-3, 10:1-8

I Samuel 9:2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a ___________ young man, and__________: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was ___________ than any of the people.

I Samuel 10:22-23 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he __________ _________ the people, he was ___________ than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

Outwardly, Saul seemed to be the “perfect choice” as King. Saul’s bad decisions and motives soon became his downfall. Again, outwardly Saul inquired of the Lord through Samuel but he did not heed what the Lord said.

Read I Samuel 13: 1-18

In verses 11 and 12; What sin did Saul commit? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In verses 13 and 14; What is his consequence/punishment? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I Samuel 15:3 What did the Lord tell Saul to do? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I Samuel 15:9 What were Saul’s actions that day? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Did he obey God? Yes or No Why or why not? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Are there times in your life God has given you instructions to follow and you chose to do something different? Did you have consequences? I have had times in my life when I knew without a doubt that God wanted me to do a specific task and I openly defied Him. The consequences were not sweet. My husband and I had been praying about a car. We found one online at a dealership. I had a peace about the car so we went to check it out. When we arrived at the dealership the car was not what I had in mind so we started looking around. I found the car that I wanted! As we began the paperwork, I knew deep in my heart that we were not supposed to get it but I lied to my husband and said that I had a peace from God. Two days after we purchased the car, the dealership called and said they needed me to come down because there was a mistake with the paperwork. On the way there God told me that this was my way out to return the car. Guess what??? I didn’t! My consequence for the next 6 months was that my family life was miserable. All we did was fight! Not just my husband and myself but our boys as well. I knew what the problem was but wasn’t sure what to do. Bro. Tom Gilliam came to our church to preach a revival very soon after. As he was preaching he kept talking about purchasing cars. I knew that I had to confess to my husband and get rid of that car! I had to make things right with God. Getting rid of the car eventually fell into place and we did not purchase another one until I laid hands on it and we knew we were supposed to buy the car. There is much more to this story but for time sake I think you get my point.

That incident made me more aware of my disobedience to God. He could have stopped me entirely from ever buying that car, but He allowed it anyway.

Now back to Saul. Read I Samuel 15:23, What was Saul’s consequence for not seeking God and following Him? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Lord has left Saul. He outwardly tried to seek God but inwardly he grew selfish and had motives that would make him great in the eyes of the people. We need to focus on what is right in God’s eyes not man’s eyes. Read I Samuel 28. Remember at this point, God has left Saul and Samuel had died. Saul is in need of guidance who does he turn to? __________________________________________

Verses 5: Why was Saul afraid? _______________________________________________

Verse 6: What did he do? ____________________________________________________

Verse 6: Did the Lord answer him? ____________________________________________

Verse 7: What was Saul’s response to the answer? ______________________________________________________________________________

Verses 18-19: What did the ghost of Samuel tell Saul? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are always consequences when the path of disobedience has been chosen.

Complete the chart below to see what consequences these men had for not seeking God.

Verse Man Sin Consequence
Judges 18:18-23 & 30 Dan Followed man made religion
II Samuel 12:20-28 Absalom V 38 had to flee to Geshur for 3 years.
Joshua 22:16 & 18 Reuben Land taken away
II Chronicles 26:7 Abraham & Sarah Sarah gave Hagar her handmaid to Abraham.
Acts 5:1-10 Ananias & Sapphira Were killed

Everyone mentioned in this lesson had consequences for not seeking God. They had a lack of reliance at some point in their lives. Seeking God’s face should be in the front of our minds at all times. We need to understand that just because we believe a deed to be good in our eyes or compared to world’s doesn’t necessarily mean it is good in God’s eyes. Proverbs 16:25 tells what happens when the ways of men are followed instead of God’s. There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

What is that consequence? __________________________________________________________________________

Step out on faith today and vow to always seek God’s face in all situations. Pray that He will help you not be like these we have studied about in this lesson. Ask God to make you more aware of when you are choosing man’s way instead of His way.

Day 1 Seeking the Face of God

A praise is in order to my God, He has allowed me to write this devotional. Instead of labeling this blog as a Bible study I prefer to call it a Bible search or seek. …. should not a people seek unto their God? Isaiah 8:19 I pray that it will be a blessing to you as it has been for me to write. People always seem to ask how long each lesson will take. Well, that depends on you. How long do you want to spend in His Word? I encourage you to dig deeper in the Word of God, and to grow closer to the Lord through this private time spend with Him. When you begin to search the scripture; God will reveal blessings and a beautiful new understanding of Himself and yourself as well.

I ask that before you begin each day with Him that you begin with prayer. Go boldly to His throne seeking what He would have you to learn. May He guide your fingers and eyes through His Word and reveal what you need.

When we seek God’s face we are drawing nearer to Him. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrew 10:22 Nothing in God’s Word is meaning less or trivial. Men and women still seek God today just as the wise men did over two thousand years ago.

Now, before you begin I want you to take a mirror and look into it. Don’t just look at your physical appearance but look deep down to your soul. What do you see? Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want out of life? When we look deep into ourselves we may see things that are not very nice. You may start to notice there are areas of life that you need to improve or work on.

The physical appearance is not what is beautiful but the soul is what makes a person beautiful. We are beautiful to God because He chips away all those areas that are not like Him. We all have nasty habits in our lives. God takes His God sledge hammer and crushes them to pieces. I pray that was you begin to seek God’s face you will see yourself as a beautiful work of God.

Our focus for this Bible search is Psalm 63. These particular scripture refers to a time in King David’s life where he was betrayed on two separate occasions. The first is where David was in distress due to King Saul being in pursuit of him to end his life. Read I Samuel 21:7-22:23 and II Samuel 15-17 for my background knowledge of these occasions. David tells us when we should seek God’s face. Psalm 63:1 When should we seeking Him? ___________________________

The phrase “early will I seek thee” could mean to start your day on a positive note and a joyful mood or to always be seeking God so when trial occur you will already have a clear and unclouded mind. I know it is hard sometimes to do this because we just do not want to get up due to our comfy beds. My boys know when I haven’t spent time with my Lord. They remind me that I am grumpy and snappy. Don’t you just love the mouths of babes? Either way you take this phrase we should always seek Him early.

Match the scripture to the correct verse.

I Samuel 22:3 ______                         A. And he inquired of the Lord for him….

I Samuel 22:10 _____                         B. Truly my soul waiteth upon the Lord: for him cometh

my salvation.

II Samuel 15:30-332 _____               C. With my spirit within me will I seek thee early.

Psalm 62:1 ______                           D. ….. until I know what God will do for me.

Psalm 61:1 _____                               E. O, Lord, I pray thee, turn thy counsel of Ahithophel into

Isaiah 26:9 _____                             F. Hear my cry O God attendeth unto my prayer.

I Corinthians Chapter 13 speaks about charity or love. As a child of God we love Him, but we will not truly know Him or love Him until we see His face. For example, when a couple is expecting a baby, they love that baby before they actually see or hold them. But once that baby arrives and the parents are holding he or she there is a much greater love than they ever could imagine. That is how it will be when we actually see God’s face. After seeking His face for so long I cannot imagine the joy and love I will be feeling at that very moment.

Fill in the blank.

I Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then__________________: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

I Corinthians 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, ___________________ may excel to the edifying of the church.

John 13:7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but _______________________ hereafter.

Read Psalm 65-68

These Psalms show us that David not only sought God’s face in times of distress but when he was on the mountain, where he was happy. Just as David did, we should seek God at all times, every day and every moment of our lives..

Application for today.

Take a moment and think about why David’s actions were needed. What times in your life are you closer to God? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Should you only seek His face during those hard and terrible times? Why or Why not?

Prayer Time: Spend time in prayer today ask God to burden your heart to seek His face and to have a mind of Christ.

Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. Philipians 3:15-16
