BE STILL AND KNOW: PART 3

When we are still and silent we can hear the voice of God. What do we hear God’s voice telling us? Even though in some of these verses God is speaking to a specific person, you can relate His words to your life. Just because He spoke to Moses in the Old Testament doesn’t mean you can’t do as Moses did. God will give you what you need no matter how or who it is relating to in the Bible. We are to live by every word in the Bible not just those in the New Testament. Deuteronomy 4:33 and 5:24 God’s speaks to man out of fire. What does He say? In Old Testament times the people heard an audible voice from God.

Verse God tells us……
Deuteronomy 3:2
Isaiah 10:24
Isaiah 40:5-6
Isaiah 66:6
Matthew 5:12
Matthew 5:16
Matthew 5:44
Matthew 17:24
John 20:22-23
John 15:15-1
John 15:4-7

I had a friend ask me one time; how do you know when God is talking to you? That was actually a tough question to answer. I mean, as a child of God you just know His voice. I knew deep in my heart God was speaking to me. If a person is lost they cannot hear the Lord’s voice. Jesus explains this in John 10:1-21.

In verse 11, what does Jesus do for His flock?

I believe you automatically know His voice once you are saved but it does take a while on your part to obey His voice. John 10: 14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. If you are his child you hear His voice John 8:47

Why and When do you think God speaks? Read John 10:27, 18:37 and 11:40-46.

In Mark 2:1 states that it was noised in the house. The word noise in this scripture refers to conversation or you could even say whispers. If someone unexpected shows up at a party, people begin to chatter. Everyone knows that person is there. They knew Jesus was at this particular house. You know when Jesus is speaking to your heart; there is no denying that His words are being heard with the ears of your heart. For goodness sake, the devils even know who Jesus is, so why wouldn’t one of His children know Him. Jesus showed up in the middle of the night; walking on the water. This is in John 21:1-14, when Jesus spoke to them they were not quite sure who was speaking. How did they answer Jesus in verse 5? But in verse 7, who knew it was Jesus? What is the name of “that disciple”? John the Beloved knew Jesus’s voice. Why do you think he could tell it was Jesus? Was it because he had laid his head on the breast of Jesus and had spent time with Him? Who are you like; the disciples in the ship or John the Beloved? Mark 1:34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Do you know His voice? Yes or No

Christ keeps you once you are saved and know His voice. You have an assurance of salvation.

Who hears God’s voice? Read Psalms 95:7, John 11:41-42, John 12:30, John 5:25, and John 18:37. Let everyone that hears God’s voice; listen.

In the four gospels God speaks in a different manner. His voice is Jesus. Jesus said several times at the end of His parable, which are stories, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Find at least five pieces of scripture that has this statement at the end. Why would Jesus make this statement?

Jesus is God in man form, so what does Jesus’ voice tell us in the New Testament. All throughout the New Testament Jesus speaks in parables. What does He want us to hear or learn from His voice in these parables?

Parable and verse Lesson
Parable of the Sower Mark 4:1-9
Parable of the Mustard seed Mark 4:30-32
Parable of the Wise man builds on Rock Matthew 7:24-27
Parable of the Tares Luke 13:18-19
Parable of the Lost Sheep Luke 15:3-7
Parable of the Talents Matthew 25:1-3
Parable of The Fig Tree Matthew 24:32-44

Just like that old commercial stated “When E.F Hutton speaks everybody listens.” God is speaking to us throughout His word. He is the word. John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. All you life’s questions can be answered just by listening to God’s voice. We want God to listen to our prayers. If we expect Him to listen to us shouldn’t we give our ears to Him?

Verses What should we do?
Psalms 85:8
Psalms 86:1
Psalms 86:6
Psalms 88:1
Isaiah 30:21

I know Something about God’s Grace

By: Kyla Rowland

I know something of mercy sweet

Too many times it has fallen on me

It’s all a part of God’s grace divine

A grace I can claim each day as mine

Oh, I know something about God’s grace

And how good it feels when He hears me pray

Just this morning, He whispered my name

So, I know something about God’s grace

When He spoke this morning how my heart rejoiced

My burden was lifted by the sound of His voice

He called me into His throne room to pray

I bowed down defeated but rose up in grace

Oh, I know something about God’s grace

And how good it feels when He hears me pray

Just this morning, He whispered my name

So, I know something about God’s grace

I love this song. What does God’s voice do you in this song?

God’s voice gives us that peace and comfort we long for especially in our time of need.

I have security in His voice. I love to listen to His sweet holy whispers; He gives me all I need.

Remember that listening to God’s voice involves attendance and attention as well as action. We should be doers of the word not just hearers.

Application: Just remember God’s voice is everywhere. You just have to listen for it. It’s more than head knowledge you can be doing what you think God wants because you know the Bible but until God tells you to do it; His kingdom will not be glorified. Pray today that God will teach you to be still. Open your heart and mind to his voice. His voice will never lead you in the wrong path. Lay your burden down before the Lord. Listen to the Holy Hush of God. Be silent and let God speak and let Him guide you. Determine in your heart to hear God and you will.

BE STILL AND KNOW: PART 2

It’s natural occurrence to want to speak in a conversation. But with God, there are many times when we should just listen. Don’t get me wrong God wants to hear our burdens and our problems, but prayer is not just venting about our day. Sometime our fleshly side comes out and we want to talk it through so we can solve it on our own. We often times lay our burdens and worries before the Lord, but we continually try to fix them ourselves. As humans we have a hard time not speaking. When we talk too much rarely does anything good come of it. In Job, Zophar said this about our mouths. Job 20:13 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth: As humans many wicked statements or desire come out of our mouths. Granted with me, my mouth starts and it will not stop. God is the only one in your relationship that is correct; nothing He says is wrong. We have to listen to His voice. Now, how do you know God’s voice?

We may not know God’s voice at first. God must reveal Himself to you in order for you know that He is speaking. 1 Samuel 3; Samuel is called by God. Read 1 Samuel 3:1-21

What was precious in those days?

Shouldn’t the Word still be precious today? It is to me; I cannot imagine my life without God’s Word because God is the Word. John 1:1

What did God do in verse 4? How did Samuel respond?

Who did he think was calling him?

What did God do in verse 6? Again, what did Samuel do? Why did he think Eli was calling him?

Verse 7 tells us why. Now Samuel ____ _____ yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet ________ unto him.

What two things did Samuel not know?

In verse 8 what happened again? When Samuel went into Eli; what did Eli realize?

What did Eli tell Samuel to do if the LORD spoke to him again?

What did Samuel do?

In the remaining verse write down what the LORD told Samuel he was going to do.

In order to know God’s voice He must be your God. Exodus 6:7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall _________that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

What did God do for the Children of Israel for them to know that He is God?

Verse God’s Actions
Exodus 14:4 & 7
Exodus 16:11-12
Exodus29:45-46
Exodus 31:13

How was His voice known to those in Biblical times?

Genesis 3:8-10 What were Adam and Eve doing when they heard the Lord’s Voice?

Genesis 22:17-18 What occurs when you obey His voice?

Genesis 26:5 What did God do for Abraham for obeying His voice?

Exodus 6:29 What did God say to Moses?

Numbers 22:19-41 What was Balaam told by God? Who does Balaam meet?

God may not just speak to you Himself he may use other people to give you His message. In this story God used two different ways to speak to Balaam. What were they?

What would you be thinking if a donkey were start speaking to you? It would completely blow my mind. I do not think I would ever be the same.

Sometimes, you may even doubt what you hear. Again, the devil sends people your way to try to place that doubt in your mind. Go back and reread Jude. Remember his false teachers are everywhere.

Isaiah 40:5 Tells us God has a what?   And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the _______ of the LORD hath spoken it. So, if He has a mouth than He is able to speak. God’s voice is powerful and calming at the same time.

If God has a mouth then He has a voice. You may ask what power does God’s voice have? We know God has a voice and we can see the power that comes along with it. Just in the first eight verses in Genesis alone, the statement “God said” is mentioned over twenty five times. I would say that whatever God has to say is important. Look at what He did with His voice is Genesis chapter 1:1-24.

Match what happened when God spoke with the correct verse.

Verse
Genesis 1:3 A.     Firmament
Genesis 1:5 B.     Earth bring forth grass
Genesis 1:6 C.     Let us make man in our in image.
Genesis 1:9 D.     Let there be light
Genesis 1:11 E.     Waters bring forth moving creatures
Genesis 1:14 F.      Lights in the firmament be divided
Genesis 1:20 G.     Earth bring forth living creatures
Genesis 1:24 H.    Waters under be gathered together
Genesis 1:26 I.       God called light day

What does God’s voice sound like? The Song of Solomon refers to God’s voice. It is a book of God’s love for us and how sweet His voice sounds to our ears. God’s voice sounds so many different ways. Read the following verse and list all the words that describe God’s voice.

Verse Sound
Job 37:4-5
Job 38:1
Job 40:9
Psalms 103:20
Psalms 47:5
Deuteronomy 4:12
Revelation 1:10
Revelation 1:15

Revelation 1:10-13 Who is the voice?

Read Psalms 29. List everything that the Lord’s voice can do and every place His voice is.

In the scripture when you read the Angel of the Lord; it is referring to Christ. “The” in English is a particular adjective and the adjective describes a noun, here the noun is Angel of the Lord. In Acts 8:26 Philip heard the voice of Christ. What was he told to do? What was Phillip’s response? Did he second guess what he heard or say “no God doesn’t want me to do that”?

You will doubt sometimes just because you think God will not use you. We have a hard time trying to figure out why God would use us because we are not capable to complete a task. Read what Moses says to God in Exodus 4:10-12; what was God’s reply to Moses? It’s important to know that we are never qualified or good enough to serve God. He makes us qualified to hear His commands and do His work. Make sure you know how to tell the difference between God’s voice and those false teachers.

As a child of God you should always seek and listen to His voice. Not just listen but hearken and follow His voice. Many blessings will be given to you. Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently ________ to the ______ of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

Application: God will lead you by his voice. Open your ears to His words. Pray for His guidance today.

BE STILL AND KNOW

Are you fully hearing and understanding what people are saying to you when you are moving around the house or office? Of course you don’t; you may think that you have absorbed every word, but you only get bits and piece that are either or unimportant important to the story.

To be a good listener you have to sit still and keep your mouth closed. Now, how hard is that??? Sometimes for me; really, really hard. In order to take everything in the other person is saying; you must stay focused on them.

The same aspect applies to God and His word; how do you expect to hear God if you are running around doing errands, you have the television on or your facebook notifications keep going off during your Bible study? The answer is you can’t. Find a quiet place and go to God. Turn off all distractions.

Do you have a quiet place? Where is it? I have actually been blessed to be able to work at home. My quiet place is on my couch when everyone has left for school or work I am able to spend that time needed with God. But when school break is going on I am not so blessed with a quiet place. I usually have to get up early before the boys do and spend time with God that way. I have trained them to where if they see me with my Bible out that they are to go back to their rooms until I am done. It took a while but that’s how they were raised so now it comes naturally.

Think about this for a minute. How long each day do you spend with God either praying or study His word? The more time you spend with Him the easier it is to recognize when He is talking to you.

Do you do all the talking? Have you known anyone that is constantly talking and you cannot get a word in? I do and I have to say it is rather annoying.

I want this lesson to focus on two words; voice and still. Voice as in, the voice of God and still, meaning you remaining motionless; not moving. If I had a theme verse for this Bible Search if would have to be Psalms 46:10.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

What does it mean to be still or to have stillness? There are several definitions, but I want to use the one that states uttering no sound: quiet, subdued, muted, calm, tranquil, and free from noise or turbulence. Synonyms of still are peaceful, placid, restful and serene. These words seem just as they pronounce they give me comfort. It calms me just hearing the words. What do each of the following verses tell us about being still?

Verse Importance of stillness
Exodus 15:16
Psalms 4:4
Psalms 23:2
Psalms 76:8
Psalms 83:31
Psalms 107:29
Isaiah 23:2
Isaiah 42:14
Jeremiah 8:14
Numbers 9:8
Lamentations 3:20

Taking Lamentations 3:20; what happens when you are still?

In Mark 4:39; what does the wind do when Christ speaks? Are you like the wind? If not list all the things that are keeping you from being like the wind.

Exodus 23:11; the Israelites were told to rest and be still. God did not just tell them this because the land needed to be replenished with nutrients. If you take that deeper look into this verse you will see that He actually wants the Israelites to rest and be still so they themselves spiritually could have nourishment and be replenished.

Why do you think the Sabbath is a day of rest? In Genesis 2:2-3, what did God do Himself on the Sabbath or seventh day? And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Mark 2:27-28 And he said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Our bodies and soul need to be rejuvenated. How else are you to understand God’s voice? You know that when you are tired and need to sleep that nothing really makes sense because your mind is not completely comprehending what is going on around you.

God makes His commandment clear to rest on the Sabbath. Read Exodus 31:12-18. What did resting on the Sabbath signify? What does God want us to do on this day?

List the things we are not supposed to do on the Sabbath? Why should we not do these things?

In Exodus 31:17, God worked for how many days and what did He do on the seventh day? What happened to Him when he did this action on the seventh day?

When you are alone and it’s quiet and you are sitting still you begin to recall memories or events of the past. We have to be still for our minds to fully take in our surrounding and to remember what God has done for us.

Why do we not listen to God’s voice? Are there consequences for a child of God not listening to His voice? I mean, isn’t it easier just to sit and listen to the Lord. Sometimes when we are not still and not listening to God’s voice He allows things to happen that gets our attention. In Paul’s case, what did God take from him?

Some background knowledge on Paul; he was formerly known as Saul. Saul persecuted Christians horrifically. He was very intelligent and he knew the law so in other words he knew God’s word. This is where having head knowledge isn’t the way to having eternal life. You must also have heart knowledge to hear that still voice of God when He speaks.

Read Act 9:1-19 and complete the fill in the blanks.

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there _________round about him a ________from heaven:

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a ________saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the ______said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a ________, but seeing _______man.

8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he _____ no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

9 And he was three days without _______, and neither did eat nor drink.

10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

11 And the Lord ______ unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

15 But the Lord _____ unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

God spoke to Ananias. Ananias didn’t understand why God wanted him to go to Saul. Ananias was willing to listen to the voice God even though he thought he would be killed. Even though we are unsure sometimes what or why God is telling us to do something we should be like Ananias and say; “Yes, LORD.”

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.

20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

What did Paul do as soon as his sight was restored?

After that day Saul’s life was changed he now had the head knowledge and heart knowledge of Christ. Paul never stopped listening God’s voice after he was called.

Galatians 1:15 But when it pleased ______, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and _______ me by his grace,

We have such craziness in our lives. It is definitely not still, but is full of clattery, boisterous, clamorous, rowdy, and unquiet time. My husband and I have our jobs, church, family and of course our three boys that keep us very busy. Between baseball, football, track, and preparing our oldest for college our days are slammed packed. Sometimes, I have schedule time to breathe. Do you ever feel that way? Think of it in this way. A car cannot run on fumes and neither can your life. You have to refuel your car before you can drive it any further or it will stop running or your engine will exploded. We must do the same in our lives. Did you get that? STOP and refuel spiritually! STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN to God’s voice in order to have a spiritually close relationship with Him.

Application: Ask God to help you to stop moving and to be still. Do not let craziness take over your life.

Jude: Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing Part 3

As we continue to look at the Book of Jude we are going to go verse by verse. I personally enjoy taking a study in this way because it seems to give you a better overall picture of what God is saying. You need to have a full understanding of what each piece of scripture is speaking on. Too many people, for example those false teachers, will take one or two verses and completely preach or teach out of context. They take a verse by itself and interpret it in their own way not getting or giving the full knowledge that God is presenting them with.

Let’s begin, in verse 17. Jude says again for us to remember. The word, remember or remembrance is mentioned 88 times throughout the Bible. When you tell your children or another person something 88 times you want them to keep those instructions or information in their head, right? Same here with God; He wants us to keep certain knowledge in our heads and not to forget it.

Verse What does God want us to remember?
Luke 22:19
2 Timothy 1:3
Lamentations 3:20
Malachi 3:16
Ecclesiastes 12:1
Proverbs 18:5
Habakkuk 3:2
Psalms 20:7
Psalms 63:6
Psalms 119:55

This word remember is a verb, which is an action. It means to cause something to come back into your mind; not to forget events, situations, or information that is important.

What are we to remember about mockers? How do they walk?

So, you should be careful who you listen too. Ezekiel 22:28 says if it is not of God then it is a lie.

And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken.

It is better for you to be what; than to be a liar?

Proverbs 19:22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

Look at what the Bible says about a lying tongue.

Verse What comes from a lying tongue?
Proverbs 20:17
Proverbs 24:2
Proverbs 26:22
Proverbs 26:23
Proverbs 26:24
Proverbs 26:28
Proverbs 18:8
Proverbs 19:1
Proverbs 19:28

Proverbs 24:28 tells us that we are not to deceive with or lips. Is that what the false teachers are doing?

Do you think God will ignore this behavior? Why or why not? God tells us he will take care of us and that we shall not be visited with evil.

Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall ______be _________ with evil.

We should no listen to those that cause us to err or all away from God.

Proverbs 19:27 __________, my son, to__________ the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

What happens to these false witnesses?

Proverbs 19:5____________________________________

Proverbs 19:9 ____________________________________

Proverbs 21:28 ___________________________________

Jude verse 19, if they do not have the Spirit what do they have? Remember, there’s that word again, that if the word “spirit” is capitalized then it is referring to the Holy Spirit, which is Christ.

Jude 20 tells us to build up ourselves in who or what? How do we do this?

What are we to keep ourselves in? Jude says to look for what?

Jude also tells us to have compassion and to make a difference. We are to have compassion towards those that are not these false teachers. That is why Jude had such a concern and God used him to write this book. The phrase in this verse “making a difference” does not have the typical meaning that we automatically are accustom too. Here we are to discern, separate or withdraw from the teachings of these false teachers. Proverbs 24:1 what does God say about our desire should be? Which, when we do this we are making a positive difference in the lives of those around us because we are standing for the TRUTH.

How are you having compassion and making a difference? List them all. What do you do each day to separate yourself or set you apart from those ungodly people?

Do others see you as a compassionate person? Yes or No. Why or why not?

What can you do differently in your life or what can you improve on to be compassionate?

How is God compassionate towards you?

How was Jesus making a difference when He was on the Earth? Shouldn’t we strive to more like Him and have a mind of Christ?

His first act of compassion towards me was when He saved me by His grace. I don’t think I can ever thank Him enough for that day.

God tells us to make a difference from what? ___________________________

What does He say for us not to make a difference in? _________________________

Match the verses below for these answers.

Verse Make a Difference
Leviticus 10:10 A. And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. (God is speaking here of the disciples.)
Leviticus 11:47 B. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans 3:22 C. And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;
Acts 15:9 D. To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

In Ezekiel 22:26 did these people make a difference? Yes or No and why or why not? Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Proverbs 20:1 Talks of the mockers. If a person is deceived of these mockers; what is said about them?

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

We need to understand God’s word and not be foolish and believe whatever people tell us. We shouldn’t be as a child because foolishness is in the heart of a child. Proverbs 21:15 tells us this.

What happens to those that are foolish? Read the following verses and list what happens to them. These are just a few verses; you can search the scriptures yourself to see what God’s word says.

Proverbs 18:2

Proverbs 18:6

Proverbs 18:7

Proverbs 19:3

Proverbs 19:13

The power of God is shown in verses 23 and 24. List what all God’s power does.

How does His power change you?

Mark which power each verse is referring too.

Verse God Power Devil Power
Exodus 15:6
Deuteronomy 8:18
2 Chronicles 25:8
2 Samuel 22:33
Luke 22:53
Acts 26:18
Romans 9:21
Hebrews 2:14

Romans 10:12-13 For there is no _____________ between the Jew and the Greek: for the ________ Lord over ________ is rich unto all that call upon him. For ____________ shall call upon the name of the Lord _________ be saved.

Who is given the free gift of salvation? Are you better than other people?

God’s power is for all that He has called by His grace. He deserves all praise because of who he is and what He does.

What does Jude say in verse 25 that we are to give God?

To the only wise God our Saviour, be _________ and _________, __________ and _________, both now and ever. Amen.

God has the only power to resist the devil and his false teachers. Give Him control over your fight against these powers that try to pull you down. It’s so important to remember how and why God has fought your battles. He has given you strength in those times that you were faint or knowledge when you had none.

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be _________ unto the higher ____________. For there is no power but of ___________: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Application: Try to be more aware of those deceivers in the world. Ask God to give you His power and strength to resist them every day. Pray your heart will be burdened to make a difference and help those that need guidance to be aware of these false teachers of today.

Jude: Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing Part 2

Let’s take a deeper look into what all the fuss is about these false teachers. Jude was not the only person in the Bible that had a concern for God’s children falling for false prophets or teachers. Peter gives a warning against false teachers in 2 Peter Chapter 2.

What are the false teachers bringing into you?

What are they bringing upon themselves? Why is this happening to them?

Why do people follow or believe these false teachers?

How do they use their words?

What does God do for the godly?

What will eventually happen to these false prophets?

It says in 2 Peter 2:12 that they speak evil about things that they do not understand. How often do we speak about things that we do not understand? Where does that get us? I would say 99% of the time when this happens we usually end up regretting what we have said. I hope that people don’t get hurt if I have said something that I really know nothing about. The difference with these false prophets or teachers is that they do not care. I would say that a lot of them don’t even realize that the Devil is using them to do his work.

Jude Verse 4

For there are certain men crept in ____________, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and _________the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

What are people doing when they creep? Usually they are sneaking so to be unnoticed. These men don’t want to be noticed they want to blend in to their surroundings. Just like a cheetah that is going to puce on its prey.

What is the task of these men?

5 I will therefore put you in _______________, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

When you hear and see the cross bar moving down over a train track and you can hear the whistle of the train blowing. What is happening? Because of all these signs and flashing lights you know that a train is coming. What would happen if you didn’t heed those warning signs? You would be hit by a train! God is warning us about these false teachers. There is a reason He wants His children to stay away from these people. Just like the conductor of the terrain does want you to get hit by the train; God does want your life wrecked by false teachings. Why would not heed God’s warnings? Listening to false teacher and being hit by a train will cause the same effect. We having already looked at 2 Peter Chapter 2 to give us an idea about these false teachers, but reread this chapter and write down each warning that is specifically given.

In 2 Peter 2:4-9 list all the ways that God delivers the godly from the hands of the unjust.

What does God want us to remember? Why does he want us to remember? Why is it so important to understand these events? I mean these things happened thousands of years ago. They are no use to me now. Wrong! We have to know about the past and know what God has done in order to have faith that God will provide for us. My husband and I try to talk about things that have happened in our past and tell our boys what God has done through those situations. When they hear what God has done for us they will recall that later in life if they are ever in a difficult situation.

These three events describe the apostate church. Apostate is where someone has heard the truth but turns their back on it. Remember that the Bible has opposites so if these apostates are against God then who are they for? They are loyal to the evil ways or evil doctrine.

8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers ________ the flesh, ______ dominion, and _______ evil of dignities.

These men want to destroy everything of God!

9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

In verse 9 who will rebuke or punish these men?

10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know _____________, as brute beasts, in those things they ________ themselves.

Why do they speak evil of God? The statement they know naturally refers to that fleshly power. It’s a natural choice to choose bad or good. We all just automatically are drawn to bad things. We have to fight this power daily. We do this by being grounded in God’s word.

11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

Who is Cain and what did he do? If you have not herd of Cain read Genesis 4. What are his ways?

Who was Balaam and what did he do? You can also read in 2 Peter 2:15.

The city of Core mentioned here was a self- ruling city. These men wanted to be in control of their own religion. They believed that they could lead the people as God did. Jude is referring here to Korah, one of the dissenters in the Old Testament who rebelled against Moses’ and Aaron’s leadership of the Israelites in the wilderness which God had ordained. He and the three other rebel leaders and their families were supernaturally killed when the earth opened up and swallowed them alive. 250 of their followers were also supernaturally killed by fire at the same time (CP Nu 16:1-35).

Relate that to our lives; isn’t that what we do sometimes; some more than others. We look out for ourselves and what will benefit us. It’s funny how even though it has been thousands of years and we are more advanced the world really hasn’t changed much at all. Well, except it to get worse!

12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

God is comparing or using metaphors to describe how these people blend into our lives. The first part of verse 12 is dealing with your charity and goodness to help others. We are shown here how they sneak into our lives and take advantage of our charitable nature. Now, God is not saying stop helping. We just have to be aware of our surroundings and without a doubt have Godly knowledge to be able to know when a deceiver is in our mist.

14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

15 To ___________ judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which _________ungodly sinners have ________ against him.

Enoch prophesied of these false teachers. What will happen to them? Why will they be judged?

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

Do you know people that have the same characteristics of those described in these verses? What advantage do these men or women have?

The main purpose of these false teachers is to lead astray believers from the true faith in Christ. Always be aware of what people are saying and how they are saying it. If you are not sure if what a person is saying is godly. Go to God’s word search through is word and He will show you. Never take a man’s word for it. God tells us the truth. Place all your faith in Him and not man. God will never lead you astray but a man or woman will.

Application: Pray that God will give you discernment to know when someone is telling you the truth. Continue to search the scripture for truth and knowledge. Always rely on God to carry you through each day.

Jude: Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing

J

Jude greets the fellow believers in love and with concern. Why was Jude concerned? In Jude’s time there were a great number of false teachers throughout the land. He wanted the believers to be aware of the deceivers and filthy dreamers that defile everything that is godly. Jude is very descriptive in his warnings. Why was it necessary to be so precise in these accounts? I mean, why would God want us to have this specific information? God wants us to learn from the past and to stay focused on Him.

I too, am concerned for the believer in faith. As in Jude’s day, we have a great deal of these false teachers also. Believers can be deceived and dragged down. My heart breaks for these that have been caught in this web of deception spun by the devil. We are all accessible to the wiles of the devil and the false teachers he puts in our lives. The stronger in faith that you are the more deceiving that false teacher will be.

I attended a church for many years. All three of my boys were dedicated in this church. My husband and I believed that our church was built on truth. A man and his wife began attending and they were wonderful people. They had been missionaries and were now looking for a church to be a part of. Once they were there for a while, this man was given the liberty to preach while our pastor was away at revivals. He was a good teacher and what he taught was truth. As time went on they became more involved in the activities of the church, which was great that others wanted to share in serving God. Then one day, this man started talking about our pastor to other members of the church in secret. He was feeding our deacons with false information. Now, we did not find this out until later. One Wednesday night, our pastor was ambushed in the pulpit! They were not happy with how he was running the church and accused him of being dishonest and not following God. This was a shock to my husband and me. The next week, our pastor left the church and my family left with him. The man that did all of this is now the pastor of that church. He whispered in ears and convinced the members that he was only saying these things to help and that he was doing God’s will. The members of our church professed to be godly people and I believed them but they were deceived by a false teacher. This man was so good and deceiving that our pastor even believed that he was a man of God. He had said all the right things. When I look back and recall incidences I can see how they were able to weave themselves into our lives. I may have been deceived by this couple but I am thankful that God has given me discernment to know that we were to leave with our pastor. We could not stay and support this wolf that had infiltrated our church. No one is above being deceived.

I am sure we all have stories like this one. We have to be ready to continually fight against the wiles of the devil. Jude did not want the believers of the faith to be lead astray. He wanted all to be aware of how the devil works and the tricks he uses.

Before we begin searching the Book of Jude let’s take a look at what our Lord tells us about those false teachers. False teachers are on in the world to lead us away from for God.

Verse Look Up.

Verse What do they do?
Malachi 3:5
Jeremiah 23:32
Jeremiah 14:14
Zechariah 8:17
Zechariah 10:2-3

God has several names for these deceivers.

False witness deceit A.    2 Peter 2:1
False prophet B.     2 Timothy 3:3
False witness C.     Proverbs 12:17
Filthy dreamers      D. Mark 13:22
False accuser      E.   Jude verse 8

In Exodus 20:16 what does it mean by a false witness? In other words don’t be a liar. Have you ever lied? Of course you have; we all have. This is a commandment not to bear false witness. We are not to go around spreading false information or lies about people. Don’t you believe that this is important not do? God specifically put it in His law.

My husband and I were watching a detective show; you know trying to figure out who did it! As the detectives started questioning the suspects and family all kinds of secrets started unraveling. The family began to fight and friendships were being torn apart. My husband made the comment, “That’s why it’s easier to tell the truth.” I don’t see how people can continually lie. At some point the lie will come back on you then you’ll be trapped by a web of lies.

What happens when you bear false witness? What does God call being a false witness?

Deuteronomy 19:15-21

15 One witness ____ ______rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

16 If a _________   ___________ rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall ___________before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a __________   ___________, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth _____________   ________   ___________ any such evil among you.

21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life _______   _______ for life, _______ for ______, __________ for ________, hand for hand, foot for foot.

David spoke of not being delivered into the hands of his enemies. Why?

Psalms 27:12

Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for ________   _________are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

Psalms 35:11

____________   _____________ did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

God tells us over and over not bear false witness so who are these people that do bear false witness or that are false prophets? What are they saying and who are they against? To bear false witness is to defraud someone’s name. I have had people say lies about me; it doesn’t feel very good. It is hard to listen to the lies but I know the truth and I let the Lord handle them. Those that know me know the truth. As Christians we have to be grounded in God’s truth in order to discern who those false teachers or accusers are.

What will these false teachers do?

Verse Actions
Matthew 24:24
Matthew 26:59
Mark 13:22
Mark 14:56-57
2 Corinthians 11:13
Galatians 2:4
Revelation 19:20

What should our actions be towards them?

Verse Our actions
Matthew 7:15
Deuteronomy 13:3
2 Timothy 4:5
2 Timothy 2:19
2 Timothy 2:16

If we continue to listen and believe these false teachers then our hearts will be hardened against God. We are not voluntarily asking for this to happen, but the more you are surrounded this false preaching you begin to think it is right. In I John 4:1 God tells us to try the spirits. Why does He say this? Read the verse below.

  1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby _________ ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth ________that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is _____ of God: and this is that spirit of ___________, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are ____ the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

Who are they?

6 We are of God: he that _________ God heareth us; he that is ______ of God heareth not us. Hereby ________ we the spirit of ________, and the _________of error.

Jesus explains to us in Mark 7:13-23 what happens when you are listening to false preaching and how your heart is affected by it. Being human we are born sinful so we have evil in hearts to begin with. Evil comes from the heart; contrary to what you are taught. For example, if you honestly think about it you will choose to what is best for you first not others. In God’s eyes that is evil putting yourself before others. That is just our flesh speaking to us to yield to what is naturally in our hearts. Read Mark 7:13-23 and list every word that Jesus uses to describe what evil does to man.

In Matthew 7:15 why would Christ say they come in sheep clothing? Why would a person need to pretend to be something that they are not?

Do you know of someone that you believed was different than they truly were? It seems too easy to fool people now days; I mean the world wants to hear and feel good about themselves. They want to know that what they are doing is fine; even if it really isn’t. They would rather hear a motivational speaker then hear the true knowledge of God. In order to see who we really are we must listen to the wrong that we do. People don’t want to hear that the only want to please themselves.

2 Timothy 4:3-4

3 For the time will come when they will ________   _________sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4 And they shall _________   __________   ________   _______ from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

2 Timothy 3:1-7

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, __________   _______, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a ___________of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6 For of this sort are they which _________into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and___________ able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

False teachers and preachers do just that they only make their listeners feel good about themselves. They give those listening, just enough scripture to convince them that they speak the truth. A lot of the times it is the truth that they tell but they are using God’s word to destroy the eternal lives of others. I mean even Satan and his demons know Christ and what his word means. Why do you think that they are so good at what they do?

Can you relate to the church Jude is describing? Are there any of these type churches today?

One man always comes to mind when I talk about these motivational speakers. He is living in Texas and always has a huge smile on his face. He has a gift! A gift to motivate and manipulate people. He’s not preaching. This man doesn’t believe what the Bible says. He speaks of God occasionally, but he puts self in his speeches before he does God. That is why he is convincing he feeds his followers just enough of God to look authentic. These new age preachers are just wolves in sheep’s clothing. They are here to deceive and to lead you away from Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not _________: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

We are continually in warfare with these powers. Demon power is referred to in Jude pulls us down away from God. Fleshly power is when we put self above God and others. Lastly, foe power this is when our adversary tries to tear us apart and destroy and defile our name.

What is the only power that can overcome all the evil powers of the world? Look up Jude verse 28.

Application: Pray that God gives you discernment to be able to spot a false teacher.
