God is calling us to have the same fruit that Christ had on earth. He wants us to be more like Him and not the world. Remember, who roams the four corners of the earth and has power here? Christ is our example of the fruit. He gives guidance and direction on how to use this fruit. If you want to know how to behave as a Christian you look towards Christ examples. We are made one with Him.

Ephesians 4:3-7 Endeavouring to keep the_______ of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is ______ body, and _______ Spirit, even as ye are called in ________ hope of your calling; One Lord, _______ faith, ______ baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto _______   _______of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

How does God himself show the fruit of longsuffering? How do we show this fruit? Mark the correct column either God or us that the verse is talking about.

Verse God Us
Romans 2:4
1 Peter 3:20
Ephesians 4:1-2
2 Peter 3:9
2 Peter 3:15
Isaiah 30:18

Genesis 6: 3,5,13 explains how God was being longsuffering with Noah. List all God did.

His patience is the reason for His longsuffering. If I got what I deserved I would be in hell right now. He is slow to anger and has an abundance of mercy.

Now, are you longsuffering? List how you are longsuffering in your day to day life. I think about my kids sometimes I just want to pinch their heads off. Admit it you feel the same way. But I don’t because I love them and we just move on and learn from our mistakes. We try to be patient with them. Why should we be patient with others?

James 5:7-11

Be _________therefore, brethren, unto the _______ of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman __________ for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long ___________ for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also_________; ___________ your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. _________ not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of ____________. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the ___________ of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of ________ mercy.

Along with patience we need to show kindness and peace. When you really start to look at each fruit you will see that they all begin to connect. You cannot have one without the other. When Paul greets his brethren he always says “peace be unto you”. Our peace is in Him. When we don’t have peace in our lives it’s not coming from God. You just saw why He is the Prince of Peace. In Isaiah 32:17 why do we have peace?

Describe being at peace. How do you feel? How does your household feel when you are at peace?

Let’s look at how people are before they were saved. Some people do have these traits before they are saved. All that means is that they are really nice and good people but imagine how their lives will be once they have been saved by the grace of God! Before salvation these traits are not fruit they are all in vain. The entire purpose of us having the fruit of the Spirit is so God can be glorified.

Colossians 1:10 what happens when God saves you?

What did we serve before our salvation? What happens after we are saved? Read Titus 3:3-5

John 15:8-9 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear ______ fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: _________ ye in my love.

How were you before you were saved? Did you do any of these things? If you did are you using them now in a godly way? Fruit can only be to God’s glory if they are godly fruit. The world has opposites and God shows us those opposites, so if there are godly fruit there are also ungodly fruit.

You can use your fruit in either way. Do you do good things just to be seen or are you doing it for God? I mean, its feels good to be noticed for what you do every once in a while. I enjoy an accolade sometime. Do you want to be known by good fruit or bad fruit? Read Romans 6:20-23, think about when you go to the groceries store to buy apples; which ones are you going to buy the nice shining ones or the ones that have bruises and rotten spots. I am very picking about my fruit. I am not going to pay for bad fruit that is rotten. Why would God want to use a person that has bad fruit? I think He is very picking about who He uses and who He doesn’t. Continue to remember that we are no good within ourselves only God makes us qualified to do His will. Sure, there are people out there that say they are doing God’s work but you can tell by their fruit if they are using them in a godly way.

Read the verses below and list the ungodly fruit.

Verse Ungodly fruit
Hosea 10:13
Galatians 5:19-21
Ephesians 5:11

Take the fruit of the Spirit and write their opposites; as you do this think about what or who is opposite of God.

Godly Fruit Ungodly Fruit

If you are not producing fruit God stops using you. You are still saved but God no longer needs you to do His work. I just can’t imagine God saying I’m not using you anymore. How ashamed I would feel; wouldn’t you feel ashamed also? Matthew, Mark and Luke have written the account of the Unfruitful tree.

Read all three accounts then fill in the chart comparing their accounts.

Matthew 7:15-20, Matthew 12:33-37, Matthew 21:19 Mark 11:12-14 Luke 13:6-9, Luke 6:43-45

What similarities in the stories do you see? What happens to the unfruitful tree? What are Jesus’s words about the tree? How can you relate that to your life?

How does God help us from becoming unfruitful? A few examples of ungodly fruit are unrighteousness, disobedience, lies, harshness, and disloyalty. I am sure that you can think of many more. Just keep these in the back of your mind for now. People definitely know you by what type of fruit you produce. Read John 15:16; you are called by God to produce fruit. God will purge or cut away the bad sinful fruit. You will begin to produce good fruit more and more. Take a farmer for example. A farmer that has apple trees every year will cut back his trees. He cuts all the old dead branches from the tree. This allows the tree to blossom and produce more fruit. If the dead pieces were left the tree would eventually die because its system would be working too hard to keep it alive. I have rose bushes; every spring I have to cut off the dead stems and throw the stems away from the roses. I do this so the dead pieces that were removed will not cause my bushes to have a disease. When I do this, new stems grow and my rose bush gets bigger and bigger. God does the same with us. He cuts away at us and gets rid of that ungodly fruit so we can grow in Him and He can use us. What happens to those that bear no fruit? Why would Satan want you to bear no fruit or bear ungodly fruit? What is his goal in your life?

Verse Godly Reward Ungodly Reward
Psalms 62:12
John 15:2
John 15:6
Romans 6:21
John 4:36
Romans 6:22
Jeremiah 21:14
Jeremiah 17:10
Romans 7:15
Micah 7:13-1
John 8:34

Relate 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 to your fruit. What is God saying to you through these verses?

The more aware you are of your bad fruit, sinful ways, you begin practicing good habits. I am a teacher so something I think about are my student’s writings. Writing has never been my strong suit, as you can tell, so I am very contentious when I am teaching writing. I don’t want to teach my students the incorrect way to write a paragraph or spell words incorrectly. Having Dyslexia has made me more aware of this. The more you are watching for something to correct the better you become at recognizing it.

As you grow as a Christian and your spiritual fruit grow. You grow stronger and your fruit get better.

2 Corinthians 9:10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and _________ the fruit of your righteousness;)

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same ________ forth _____ fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15:16 what is Christ telling us to do? Does He want us to hide our fruit? Do you hide yours and not share with others? We are always telling people; especially kids to share; that it’s not nice to keep everything for yourselves.

What should you be full of? Romans 15:14 tells us. Are these fruit of the Spirit? Yes or No

Remember, before you react or do something you shouldn’t ask yourself; what is acceptable in God’s eyes? Is this a good or bad fruit to have? We should always be an example and be praying for those that are making those wrong decisions in life. Jesus ate with the publicans and it was looked upon as bad but some were saved. We never know how God is using us. We have to be able to keep ourselves separated from bad choices and yet still share our fruit with others. Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the ________ works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Ephesians 5:9-10 (For the _______ of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is ______ unto the Lord.

Our peace, joy, and gladness seem to fade away over the years. David even asked God to restore his soul in Psalms 23. We should do the same ask to restore or renew our soul & spirit.

Ephesians 4:23

Galatians 6:1

Application: Pray God will show you how to bear good fruit so He can use you. Ask Him to restore your fruit; to refresh your spirit so He can use you to your fullest. Glorify God in all things. Do a good deed this week and don’t tell anyone about it. It’s a secret between you and God.

To be fruity or not to be fruity; that is the question? So what are you? How do people see you? How does God see you? I am always wondering how people see me. As I get older, I try to make a conscience effort to be more aware of how I treat others or even the expression that I have on my face. You never know the way you will affect those around you. Just a smile changes a person attitude about you. Think about sports or your job. Do people notice when you are doing well? If you don’t practice or put forth a 100% effort your coach or your boss will not use. When you are dedicated and want to do your best for your team or your job you stand out from the other players or co-workers.

Are you aware of the fruit of the Spirit? Can you name them one by one? As a Christian, you are to produce fruit. The more fruit that you produce the more God will use you. This should be our main goals as a Christian. You can be a Christian and not walk in the Spirit and have the fruit Christ said you need. You’ll just be a very miserable and unhappy one. You will never feel satisfied in your life or with what you are doing in your life. When we are not bearing the fruit, God desires us to bear we are out of God’s will. You need these fruit to be good and pleasing to God. Colossians 3:12 is one of many that tells us to put these traits on and go out into the world to be different separated from it. People see the fruit you bear they just may not know why and what they are. They just know that you are different in some way than others that they see.

Look at each of these verses and write the fruit of the Spirit that is mentioned in it.

Verse Fruit of the Spirit
Philippians 1:11
Galatians 5:22-23
Ephesians 5:9
2 Corinthians 9:10
