Mary Did You Know?

How do you picture the baby Jesus? For me, I see Mary holding a dark skinned chubby baby that has bright eyes and a head full of black hair. I love to think about what THIS baby was like and how Mary cared for him. I mean what was Mary thinking when she was holding Him. I know how excited I was the first time I held my boys! I thought about the responsibilities that I would have as a mother and then thought about their future. I am sure that Mary had those same thoughts.

Luke 2:19 and 51 says Mary pondered them in her heart. Did she wonder what things her son would do and what was in store for him? All mothers have a tendency to protect their young no matter how old they are. This is just an attribute that comes naturally to mothers throughout the animal kingdom. God has given us this ability and function.

Mary may not have understood all that her son would go through, but she did know why. In Luke 2:49 Jesus tells Mary and Joseph his purpose. Jesus says, “I must be about my Father’s business”. Read the following verse and complete the chart that tells of Jesus’s purpose on Earth.

Scripture His purpose
Matthew 1:18-23
Luke 1:26-33
Acts 4:10-12
Acts 5:31
Acts 13:23
Acts 13:34-39

Jesus is the remedy to world’s situation today and always. Isaiah prophesied of this. Isaiah 9:6-7 we see the crib, the cross, and the crown. What a vision to see for Isaiah! We have hope in the free gift of Salvation. Because of the baby born on this special day we now call Christmas!

Mary had heard this all her life about the coming Messiah. Now, she was to carry this child and raise him. I love the song Mary Did You Know?

Mary did you know?

Would someday walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kissed your little baby
Then you’ve kissed the face of God.

Mary Did you know??
Mary, did you know??

The blind will see, the deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak,
the praises of the Lamb.

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Was Heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping Child you’re holding
Is the great “I AM

My favorite line is “when you kiss your little baby you’ve kissed the face of God.” WOW! Joy just rises up inside of me because one day I will be able to kiss the face of God as well. As a child of the King, Christmas has a different meaning for me. I am moved by the old Christmas hymns and the story of Christ birth that is read out of Matthew and Luke. He is my Savior, the purpose of him being born was to die for me and you.
